Students training in Baratha Nathyam.
Founded in 1936, by Rukmini Devi Arundale and her husband Dr George Arundale, Kalakshetra has played a significant part in the revival of Indian art and crafts, especially the dance form of Bharatnatyam.
Kalakshetra (which means 'holy place of art'), is situated on a sprawling 100 acre campus at Adyar. Students enjoy that hard-to-get proximity with greenery and the sea. Today, some of the most respected exponents in the performing arts are products of Kalakshetra.

Purification.Tiruvappur Muthu Mariyamman Temple

When a loved one falls ill, the family prays to God to heal their child. And when the person is cured,
their family takes them to the temple (usually where the main diety is a Goddess) and makes them lie down
and "offered" to God, this is symbolically meant to say "Thank you Almighty, this loved one has been healed,
we offer her and her good health to you, for without you nothing is possible". A lot of deadly diseases like small pox
have made people over the centuries believe that a lot is not in their hands, and it is only upto God to heal them.
This is a mark of reverence to the Almighty.

Making Puri... Velanganni

A picture taken in a strange town. Velanganni, on the Coromandel coast, is the site of a famous Roman Catholic Basalica
of our Lady of good health. This guy was making Puri, a fried dough, very, very good. You can see some on the right of
the image. You deep it in a "sauce", sambar, or others. Can't wait to have some, even though you mostly find it in
Southern India. On the wall behind, you can see pictures of Ghandi and Vivekananda.

Biking. Tiruvarur

A street in the small town of Tiruvarur. I took this picture because of "Tata", the brand of cars and
trucks you'll see everywhere in India. I wanted a woman on an Indian bike too. I got a few different
versions of his image. The Thyagararajaswami temple is huge, and colorful
The town is known because on 4th may 1767 the great saint composer Sri Thyagaraja was born in
Tiruvayur in Tanjore districts.Thyagraja was a prodigy who was gifted with melodious voice.

On the Road. Tiruvanamalai

An image of pilgrims on their way to Tirupati. Original images, no cropping...
On my last week in India, some pilgrims I met 70km outside Tiruvanamalai on
their way to the huge temple of Tirupati in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.
They still had more than 120 km to walk..
Drying up their close while walking..couldn't resist..

Betel spit. Kanchipuram

A woman in the Sri Ekambaranathar temple in Kanchipuram. This woman, after doing her laundry
was waiting for it to dry and spitting betel.. A common scene all over India.
Kanchipuram is one of the 7 sacred cities of India. One of my favorite..
The other cities sacred are Ayodhya, Haridwar, Varanasi, Mathura, Ujjain and Dwarka.

In the Indian sub-continent, the leaves of the betel (piper betle) are used as wrappers for ‘pan’,
a roll of raw spices that are chewed slowly as a digestive and stimulant—a chewing gum substitute

Sunset in Vaitheeswarankoil

Almost sunset. A little beggar is washing her only clothes in the sacred tank of the Vaitheeswarankoil temple in
Tamil Nadu. The red string she is wearing around her waist is what all children have on, to keep the evil eye away.
The Vaitheeswarankoil temple (koil, or kovil means temple in the Tamil language) is dedicated to Lord Shiva and
his wife Parvati. The gopuram (temple tower) is exquisitely decorated with hundreds of brightly painted deities.
A colourful corridor, as I had never seen before, leads into the main prayer halls.

Of women and sarees. Tiruchendur

When composing an image, I have a tendency to prefer one without any perspective in it. I like the flat colours.
In Tiruchendur, on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, I met a few women who came to the temple to pray to
Murugan. After the ritual bath, on the beach, in front of the majestic and beautiful temple they needed to dry up
their colourful saris. I couldn't resist but to portray them the way I like.Tiruchendur, in the far south of Tamil Nadu,
is renowned among Murugan devotees everywhere as one of the greatest centres of the Lord Aru Padai Veedugal’s,
literally 'Six Battle Camps'. Indeed, it is here that Murugan and his deva-sena, or army of celestials, confront and
vanquish the titan Surapadma and his demonic horde. This struggle is annually re-created at Tiruchendur on the
sixth day of Skanda Sashti, the 'Six (days) of Skanda'.

Praying HANUMAN. Madurai

A woman praying to the monkey god Hanuman inside the magnificent Meenakshi temple in Madurai.
The enormous temple complex is dedicated to Shiva, known here as Sundareshvara and his consort Parvati,
or Meenakshi. The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making it as splendid
as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th century and left a majestic
imprint of their rule in the Meenakshi - Sundareswarar Temple.
